Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad is a major agricultural research organization of the Government of Punjab. Its main campus is located on Jhang Road, Faisalabad. The institute was established in its present form in 1962 after the separation of agricultural research and education activities from the former Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute Lyallpur, which was established in 1906.
AARI plays an important role in agricultural research, crop improvement, development of production technologies, pest and disease management, soil and water research, post-harvest technology and provision of improved planting material. Its research activities support farmers, agricultural professionals, researchers, students and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
The institute includes specialized research institutes, research stations, testing centers, service laboratories and research and demonstration farms located across Punjab. This extensive research structure allows AARI to work on different crops and agricultural conditions across the province.
One of the important areas of AARI's work is the development and improvement of crop varieties. Researchers work on improving crops for characteristics such as yield, quality, resistance to pests and diseases, and tolerance to environmental stresses. The institute also works on production technologies that can help farmers improve agricultural productivity.
AARI provides services directly relevant to farmers. These include soil and water testing, agricultural advisory services, dissemination of crop production technologies and provision of approved seeds and horticultural plants. The Agriculture Department states that AARI provides pre-basic seed of approved varieties of vegetables, wheat, maize, fodder, oilseeds, pulses and nuts, while nursery plants of horticultural crops and citrus fruits are also provided at subsidized rates.
The institute also operates specialized laboratory facilities. Its Soil and Water Testing Laboratory at AARI, Jhang Road, Faisalabad provides testing services for farmers and supports efficient use of soil, water and fertilizer resources. The laboratory contact listed by the Punjab Agriculture Department is 041-9201805, with mobile contact 0345-7672227 and email swtl_fasd@yahoo.com.
AARI's Pesticides Quality Control Laboratory at Jhang Road, Faisalabad is another specialized facility. It supports pesticide-related quality control and agricultural regulatory activities. The listed contact number is 041-9200813.
The institute also contributes to agricultural education and knowledge sharing. Its research and information resources support agricultural researchers, students and professionals. AARI's Main Library and Information Resource Centre contains books, laboratory manuals, research articles, journals and digital databases for research and learning.
AARI therefore serves not only as a research institute but also as a source of agricultural technology, testing facilities, improved seed and plants, farmer advisory services and technical information. Its work contributes to improving agricultural productivity, food security, sustainable resource use and the development of new agricultural technologies in Punjab.

AARI conducts agricultural research focused on improving crop productivity, quality and sustainability. Research programs cover major crops and different agricultural disciplines, with the aim of developing technologies and solutions that can be transferred to farming communities.
The institute works on genetic improvement and development of crop varieties with desirable economic and agricultural characteristics. Research focuses on improving yield, quality and resistance or tolerance to different biotic and environmental stresses.
AARI develops and upgrades production technologies for different crops. These technologies are intended to help farmers improve crop management, production efficiency and overall agricultural returns.
The Soil and Water Testing Laboratory at AARI, Jhang Road, Faisalabad provides analytical services for soil and water samples. Testing helps farmers understand the quality and characteristics of their soil and irrigation water and supports better fertilizer and water-management decisions.
AARI provides advisory and technical services to farmers regarding crop production technologies and agricultural practices. Research findings and recommendations are disseminated to help farmers address production challenges and improve crop management.
AARI provides pre-basic seed of approved varieties of various vegetables, wheat, maize, fodder crops, oilseeds, pulses and nuts on a limited scale and at reasonable rates. Farmers can contact the relevant research institute to confirm availability.
The institute provides nursery plants of horticultural crops and citrus fruits at subsidized rates. Availability depends on the relevant research institute and current nursery stock.
AARI operates a Pesticides Quality Control Laboratory at Jhang Road, Faisalabad. The laboratory supports pesticide quality-control and related regulatory activities within the agricultural sector.
Agricultural research at AARI includes work related to protection of crops from insect pests, diseases and weeds. The objective is to develop environmentally responsible approaches that reduce crop losses and support sustainable production.
AARI conducts research into processing, preservation and post-harvest technology for fruits and vegetables. Its Post Harvest Research Centre also provides analytical services related to nutritional quality evaluation of crops, fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products.
The Biochemistry Section associated with the Post Harvest Research Centre evaluates the nutritional quality of grain crops, fruits, vegetables and fodder. Analytical services can also be provided to farmers, industries and AARI research disciplines for nutritional quality testing of products and samples.
AARI has seed-testing and analytical facilities supporting the assessment of seed quality. The institute's research services include work aimed at ensuring quality seed availability for farmers.
The institute includes agricultural biotechnology research activities supporting modern approaches to crop improvement and agricultural research. These activities complement conventional crop breeding and other research programs.
AARI supports students and agricultural researchers through research facilities, technical resources and opportunities for academic and research activities. Its research institutes and specialized sections provide a practical environment for agricultural studies.
The AARI Main Library and Information Resource Centre provides researchers and students with access to books, laboratory manuals, research articles, journals and digital databases. The library supports research, information access and dissemination of agricultural knowledge.
AARI works to transfer research-based agricultural technologies and recommendations to farmers and other stakeholders. This helps connect scientific research with practical agricultural production.
